Did you know that Africa Day is May 25th every year? This date marks a significant milestone in the history of Africa. In 1963, leaders of thirty-two independent African States congregated in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to form the Organisation of African Unity (OAU). This date was called African Liberation Day.

The first Africa Liberation Day celebration took place in Accra, Ghana where Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana's then President, initiated that May25th, should be marked all over the world as a day of celebration and liberation for all African countries and people.

At African Image Alliance, we believe this date could and should be recognised within the UK events calendar as an opportunity to celebrate Africa's diversity and achievements. We do not need to wait for another Africa 95, 05, G8 summit or Live Aid anniversary to bring African issues into the forefront of contemporary society. People of African and Non-African descent believe that the achievements of African culture and society both on the continent and Disapora should be celebrated annually.
